CNC Machined Intake Manifold

A CNC machined intake manifold for the Ford Focus 2.3 ST, with five nozzle ports pre machined into the plenum for water injection.

The standard manifold is an injection moulded composite part. Its shape has to suit the mould and the production cost, so the plenum volume and the runner shapes are set by what is quiet and cheap to build, not by what the engine wants under boost. Fitting water injection to it means drilling and tapping a finished manifold yourself, with very little control over position, angle or swarf.

The AutoScience Studio manifold is CNC machined instead. The plenum and all four runners are cut directly by the tool, so the internal shape does not have to allow for draft angles and the transitions stay continuous. Five nozzle ports are machined into the plenum at the factory, so a water injection kit bolts straight on and nothing has to be drilled once the manifold is on the car.

▌ Compared with standard

• The standard manifold is moulded, so its internal shape is limited by draft angles. This one is machined, so it is not.
• The standard manifold has no nozzle ports. This one leaves the factory with five.
